Two kinds of kitchen on one hillside
Grass Lawn is one of the ten neighbourhoods the City of Redmond recognises, and it climbs a hillside on the city’s west side. Most of it is housing at low to moderate density, and its apartments and condos cluster towards the eastern end. In the houses the Wolf is more often gas, a cooktop or a rangetop put in when the kitchen was redone. In a condo it may be induction or electric instead, so the first thing to settle on the phone is which kind of top you have.
Sorting a gas burner before you ring
Start with clicking that carries on once the flame has caught. Wolf’s own list of causes starts with spills, and its first remedies are a burner left to dry after a wipe-down or a boil-over (a hair dryer on low hurries it along), a cap set back centred and flat, and a knob pressed in and let go so it springs back. Clicking that survives all three is a call.
An orange flame often follows building work. Sanding a floor, drywall compound, fresh paint or stain all put enough into the air to colour a flame, and Wolf names work in the house as a cause, alongside a humidifier running through the winter. On natural gas the flame should burn blue around a darker blue core, so once the dust has settled and the room has aired, look again: orange in clean air is worth a visit.
A low flame that will not stay lit can be the hood rather than the burner. Wolf warns that a powerful enough blower can pull the flames off a surface burner, so try the same setting with the fan turned down. If the flame still dies, the burner needs a technician.
What to have ready
Say whether it is a cooktop, a rangetop or a range, gas or induction, and which burner or zone is at fault. The rating plate carries the model and serial: underneath a cooktop, and on a sealed-burner rangetop along the bottom edge of the control panel at its right-hand end.
